About HIDVA support

A HIDVA is a trained professional who provides a specialist service to victim-survivors in hospitals experiencing domestic abuse. If you’re attending a hospital appointment, are admitted as a patient or are a professional within a hospital you can access the support of one of our HIDVAs.

We are not part of the police or courts, which means we are a totally independent source of support to advocate for you. Our main aim is to help you, and your children, reach a greater level of safety. We can offer you support and advice, tell you your options, inform you of your rights concerning legal and housing and bring together the necessary agencies.

“It feels they have given me an invitation to life, with hope and happiness... I'm so grateful"

How can a HIDVA help me?

Our team of HIDVA’s are located within hospitals and in the community, and are here to support you towards safety. They can offer practical and emotional support in various ways from informing you of your options to submitting necessary reports to the police or other agencies. HIDVA’s can also refer you to our other more long term support options, such as IDVA or Outreach support. They can also advocate on your behalf with other agencies, including police, refuge, housing and health services to support your safety after leaving hospital.

A HIDVA can:

  • Help you recognise and understand the risks of domestic abuse
  • Explore and explain your rights and options
  • Empower you to feel in control of your journey to be free from abuse
  • Risk assess your safety levels for leaving hospital and returning home
  • Help you develop a personalised safety plan to reduce the risk of harm to you and your children
  • Work with other agencies, including translation services, police and social services, to help increase your safety
  • Ensure agencies work together to help keep you safe, keeping your voice and needs at the centre of all support
  • Empower you to make your own decisions that are right for you
  • Refer you onto further ongoing domestic abuse services to continue accessing support after leaving hospital

Rising Sun HIDVA’s provide support year round and through periods where we commonly see an increase in domestic abuse, such as football tournaments, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc.

How does it work?

Receiving support from a Rising Sun HIDVA is completely free for victim-survivors experiencing domestic in Kent & Canterbury, William Harvey, Buckland and Darent Valley Hospitals. You can be referred into our service by hospital staff, external agencies, your Rising Sun IDVA or Outreach Worker, friends & family or yourself.

Our HIDVAs sit within the hospital’s Safeguarding Team, and will attend all of their meetings to learn about patients that are recognised as vulnerable or have disclosed domestic abuse. Following safeguarding meetings, referrals or self-disclosures, a HIDVA can come and chat to you at your bedside if it’s safe to do so, or see you during an appointment so that you’re in a safe and secure place. If you’ve already been discharged, they will call you to offer you support or refer you into Rising Sun’s other services.

HIDVA’s will also do walkabouts of the ward to talk to staff and patients about the support they offer.

We do! Our team of HIDVA’s are located within hospitals to support you towards safety.

Whether you’re attending the hospital for an appointment, are an inpatient or are visiting A&E, a HIDVA can come and provide you with specialist domestic abuse support in your appointment, at your bedside or in a discreet manner.

We do! We recognise that it’s not only patients that need specialist domestic abuse support. Our HIDVAs ensure staff across the hospitals that we provide our service in, who are at risk of or are experiencing domestic abuse, are also able to receive specialist support to reach safety.

Hospital staff can get in touch with a HIDVA and ask for support, and all support will be confidential in line with our safeguarding policy.

Yes we can. If a client that you’re supporting has been admitted to one of the hospitals that we work within, we can offer them specialist domestic support during their time as a patient, and can then refer them into their local domestic abuse service when they are discharged to continue their journey of support in the community.

Whilst we can only support patients within the hospitals that we are contracted to, we can support other professionals in providing domestic abuse support if a HIDVA is not available in that hospital.

We would always recommend that you speak to the Safeguarding Team within the hospital, and enquire about whether they have a HIDVA service in their hospital.

Yes you can. We are available to have chats with friends and family members who would like to raise concerns about their loved one, whether they’re a patient or a staff member at the hospital. We can have conversations discretely, they can be anonymous and we don’t have to take any action following the conversation.

Please note: if you raise a serious safeguarding issue, we may have to take further action in line with our safeguarding policy.

Domestic abuse training in hospitals

We provide specialist domestic abuse training to staff within the hospitals that we provide our HIDVA service in. We cover:

  • The need for specialist IDVAs in hospitals
  • How to recognise signs of domestic abuse in patients
  • How to ask patients about domestic abuse
  • What to do when a patient discloses domestic abuse

If you work in a hospital and would like your team to receive training, please get in touch.
